Look for the unfinished decision
An incomplete basket does not tell you why someone stopped. They may have been interrupted, comparing options or checking shipping. Avoid writing as if you know the reason. Use support questions and checkout observations to identify useful information.
Start with a straightforward reminder and link to the basket. A later message can answer a common product question or explain a material term. The final follow-up can simply leave the door open without pressure.
Use facts before an incentive
For a £28 handmade mug, useful details might be capacity, care, glaze variation, shipping cost and dispatch timing. Those answers help someone decide. A discount can reduce margin without solving a shipping or fit concern.
If you test an incentive, calculate contribution profit and use an actual approved promotion. Do not invent limited stock, a unique code or a last-chance deadline. Make sure the store and email display the same terms.
A practical email example
Subject: A question about the blue mug? Body: Still deciding? It holds 300 ml and is dishwasher-safe. Each glaze varies slightly. Shipping is £4, and we dispatch within three working days. [Return to your basket]. Reply if you need a closer look at the handle or finish.
Replace the placeholder with the actual recovery URL from your ecommerce platform. Review personalization and fallback text. Test the message without real customer data before enabling a sequence.
Measure incremental value carefully
Track completed recovered orders, contribution profit and unsubscribes. Email-attributed revenue alone does not prove the message caused every purchase. Some customers would have returned without it.
Use a suitable holdout or controlled experiment when volume allows. At low volume, describe observed results honestly and review customer feedback. Confirm sending eligibility, consent and your platform configuration before using the draft.
Put the brief to work.
