A practical product page copy checklist

Write an ecommerce product page from verified specifications, everyday use, care, shipping and buyer questions. Includes a handmade mug example.

Name the item before selling the feeling

A customer should recognize what is being sold from the title and first image. Put the product identity, important variant and defining specification near the top. A mug page should make capacity and material easy to find before asking the buyer to imagine a better morning.

Translate features into practical uses without overstating them. “Dishwasher-safe” can support an easy-care message. It does not support a claim that the mug lasts forever. Keep the original specifications beside the draft during review.

Answer the questions that block a purchase

Buyers need to know size, fit, compatibility, care and what is included. Use actual support questions to choose the details. For handmade objects, explain variation so a different glaze pattern does not become an unpleasant surprise.

Make shipping cost and dispatch timing visible before checkout. Dispatch within three working days is different from delivery within three working days. Link to your real returns policy and avoid promising terms that are not configured in your store.

Worked example: a stoneware mug

Your everyday coffee, in handmade stoneware. A 300 ml blue mug with a rounded handle. Each glaze varies slightly. Dishwasher-safe. £28. Shipping £4; dispatch within three working days.

This example is deliberately plain. It makes the product and purchase terms clear. Real photographs of the handle, interior and scale would help the customer make the decision. Do not use a generated photo that changes the actual product’s shape or finish.

Measure the whole decision

A change that increases add-to-cart clicks can still reduce completed orders. Compare purchase rate and revenue or contribution profit per eligible visitor. Watch returns and support contacts alongside conversion.

Use a consistent date range and definition of an eligible visit. Record significant changes in stock, price, shipping or acquisition source. If several things changed together, do not attribute the outcome to a headline alone.

Put the brief to work.
